What is Free Community WiFi?
The Free WiFi Project is an initiative to by Mesh Canada to bring free wireless internet access to the public. Our mission began in the heart of Old Strathcona in Edmonton, Alberta during the summer of 2008.
Who's behind this cool project?
What's the catch? Is this really free?
Yes! Our network offers FREE, secure, unrestricted wireless internet access from members of the community who have opted to share their internet connection.
Will this interfere with my existing network?
Nope! Free WiFi is a self contained network that cannot access anything but the internet. A user connected to the network cannot see other users and traffic will only pass out to the internet.
Is there a security risk?
Zilch. Using our network is much safer than connecting to a random unprotected wireless connection. With that said you should always practice safe internet browsing when on a public network and make sure you have a firewall running on your computer.
Can we monitor your traffic?
We cannot monitor WHAT you do, but we do monitor HOW MUCH of it you do. This allows us to recognize who is "hogging" the service and potentially hurting the experience for others. If you're found abusing our network you might find yourself browsing pretty slowly all of a sudden, if you catch our drift ;)
Will you need access to my store to maintain the network?
99% of network maintenance is done behind the scenes. Since our technology is always improving there are always bugs to work out. On the rare occasion when we may need physical access to your business, it will be a brief process to power-cycle the node, or replace it completely. We will always call in advance if we need a simple reset.
Can Free WiFi help install a wireless network at my cafe, coffee shop, or business?
Yes! We would love to help you share your internet access with the public. If you would like to chat more about how we can help please use our contact form. Or check out our Help Us Out page for all the info you need.
